“Árran (Arnested) is a sculpture in which three slender, dark logs rise up and are supported by three corresponding logs, tied together by hemp rope. Wedged into the cavity that forms between them, the artist has placed an elegantly hollowed and symmetrically cut wooden sphere.
My thoughts inevitably wander back to a time when craft traditions and knowledge of materials stood stronger in everyday life through the language between hands and knife. Chip by chip, hour by hour, to the almost dizzying thought, that this was once a piece of timber, not to mention a living three!
The towering wooden sculpture reflects the artist's knowledge and background as a woodcarver - and interest in craft traditions and food crafts such as beer brewing. Kveik, which is included in the list of materials for the work, refers to the traditional Norwegian farm yeast that was stored on carved logs, or yeast wreaths. In the context of an exhibition with integrated Sami language, symbols and expressions, the round carved wooden ball also evokes associations with the komsekule, a piece of jewelery called šiella in Sami, which means protection. The wooden ball is raised and carefully shielded by the strong sticks – perhaps it in itself also acts protectively?”
