INTERTIDAL II - spa
By the artist duo Devils Apron (Trond Ansten & Kåre Aleksander Grundvåg)
at Lofoten International Art Festival (LIAF), 2019
An algal infused intervention in big fish containers aims to ask the question:
CAN WE FACILITATE AN INTIMATE MEETING BETWEEN LIFE ON SHALLOW WATER AND US HUMANS?
The performance was generously sponsored with cosmetics from Arkhangelsk Experimental Industrial Seaweed Factory, Fish-containers from the neighbour cod factory, a lot of ocean vegetables and a big pile of hot rocks harvested in the nearby surroundings.
Our experimental algal spa was commissioned for The Kelp Congress by LIAF2019
Intertidal Shelter I & II was part of the publication TANGBOKA which was published by The Kelp Congress. In this book, we get close to seaweed and kelp in the light of art and thinking that cares for marine ecosystems. The book allows us to gain insight by spending time with these macroalgae, thereby revealing their properties.
TANGBOKA deals with the politics of kelp and the sea through essays, stories and art - if not to say the smooth transitions between them. It brings together a variety of perspectives, thoughts, ideas, stories and facts about seaweed and kelp. The book emphasizes imagination, curiosity and imagination as a basis for knowledge and reflection.
